Lennie Chapter 5

In Chapter 5, Lennie's attitude begins to change. He was shy and innocent and then suddenly changes to being horrible and violent. We see these changes, on the first page...
After lennie failed to obey George's orders of not touching the puppy and had killed it, he eventually realises he did a bad thing. Lennie killing the puppy shows he has a mind of a child's (because of his disability) and cannot think straight and has not realised how serious killing something is. In the book, Lennie says ''Why do you got to get killed? You ain’t so little as mice. I didn’t bounce you hard.''
He then carrys on saying... ''This ain’t no bad thing like I got to go hide in the brush. Oh! no. This ain’t. I’ll tell George I foun’ it dead.” This shows he does understand that he killed the pup, but doesn't think it is that bad that he had killed something. This can be worrying as he may do this in the future, again...
Another situation that follows on from the pup showing how lennie has changed, is the murder of Curley's wife. When Lennie was secretly talking to Curley's wife, Lennie said ''I like to pet nice things with my fingers, sof’ things.''
Curleys wife had replied and allowed him to feel her hair because it was soft, Lennie began to turn even stranger again... He loved her hair so would not let go, Curley's wife began to cry ''“Look out, now, you’ll muss it.” And then she cried angrily, “You stop it now, you’ll mess it all up.” She jerked her head sideways, and Lennie’s fingers closed on her hair and hung on. “Let go,” she cried. “You let go!”
Lennie would not let go, showing he cannot control himself and understand what he is doing wrong.
When Curley's wife screamed, it led to lennie panicing... It says in the book:
'Lennie was in a panic. His face was contorted. She screamed then, and Lennie’s other hand closed over her mouth and nose. “Please don’t,” he begged. “Oh! Please don’t do that. George’ll be mad.”
This shows how he panicked because of George, he then said
''George gonna say I done a bad thing. He ain’t gonna let me tend no rabbits.''
-Showing that he was worried just about not being able to tend the rabbits, he didn't realise he was hurting her because he was panicking about George and the rabbits. Lennie did not think that he was doing wrong!
When she carried on yelling, Lennie became more angry (which is not usually like him) and said...
“Don’t you go yellin’,” he said, and he shook her; and her body flopped like a fish. And then she was still, for Lennie had broken her neck.
This shows that he does not realise how strong he is and that killing someone is bad, as he didn't understand when killing the pup too. Lennie also did not know he was hurting her, he did not see the strength he had!

George:
George is described to have 'restless eyes' which suggests he is tired of looking after Lennie. He has a 'bony nose' and is 'small and quick'. He is also is 'dressed in denim' which suggests that he works on the ranch. He moves around to get work at the ranches but cannot seem to get a job as he is always having to look after Lennie.

Lennie:
Lennie is described to have 'a mind of a child'. He has a mental disability which prevents him from keeping a job. In the book, he is also called 'stupid' and 'forgetful' because of his disability.
In the book he is also referred to as 'drinking like a horse' or hands that are 'big like a bear paw'.
In the book, it says he is wearing 'denim clothes' and is quite big.

He had lost his right hand in a farm accident. He is a tall old man, with stooped shoulders which represent he is old. In the book, he was described as 'a tall stoop shouldered old man'.

Slim:
Slim is said to be known as the 'prince of the ranch' because the men respect him. He is also said to 'walk like royalty', suggesting he is the leader to.
He is described to have 'long, black, damp hair' this could suggest the dampness is actually sweat, meaning he works hard at the ranch. He wears a 'denim jacket' which means he is one of the workers.

Curley
Curley is younger than the others, he is described to have 'curley hair' and is 'smaller'. His job is as a 'light weight boxer' and has a very short temper.
He is the bosses son and although he has a 'short temper' and is small, he 'picks on bigger guys' as he knows they cannot hurt him, he is 'untouchable' because of his fathers job.

Curley's Wife
Curleys wife's name is unknown. In the book, she always seems to be in the way of the 'sunshine', which could, maybe refer to her being part of ruining George and Lennie's dream of owning their own farm.
Her appearance is 'full rouged lips', nails painted red, 'red mules' (shoes) with 'red ostrich feathers on her shoes'. she is basically described to be wearing all red clothing. She is maybe described to be wearing red clothes as red is a conetation, which could symbolise... Love, anger, passion or danger.
