Lennie Chapter 5

In Chapter 5, Lennie's attitude begins to change. He was shy and innocent and then suddenly changes to being horrible and violent. We see these changes, on the first page...
After lennie failed to obey George's orders of not touching the puppy and had killed it, he eventually realises he did a bad thing. Lennie killing the puppy shows he has a mind of a child's (because of his disability) and cannot think straight and has not realised how serious killing something is. In the book, Lennie says ''Why do you got to get killed? You ain’t so little as mice. I didn’t bounce you hard.''
He then carrys on saying... ''This ain’t no bad thing like I got to go hide in the brush. Oh! no. This ain’t. I’ll tell George I foun’ it dead.” This shows he does understand that he killed the pup, but doesn't think it is that bad that he had killed something. This can be worrying as he may do this in the future, again...
Another situation that follows on from the pup showing how lennie has changed, is the murder of Curley's wife. When Lennie was secretly talking to Curley's wife, Lennie said ''I like to pet nice things with my fingers, sof’ things.''
Curleys wife had replied and allowed him to feel her hair because it was soft, Lennie began to turn even stranger again... He loved her hair so would not let go, Curley's wife began to cry ''“Look out, now, you’ll muss it.” And then she cried angrily, “You stop it now, you’ll mess it all up.” She jerked her head sideways, and Lennie’s fingers closed on her hair and hung on. “Let go,” she cried. “You let go!”
Lennie would not let go, showing he cannot control himself and understand what he is doing wrong.
When Curley's wife screamed, it led to lennie panicing... It says in the book:
'Lennie was in a panic. His face was contorted. She screamed then, and Lennie’s other hand closed over her mouth and nose. “Please don’t,” he begged. “Oh! Please don’t do that. George’ll be mad.”
This shows how he panicked because of George, he then said
''George gonna say I done a bad thing. He ain’t gonna let me tend no rabbits.''
-Showing that he was worried just about not being able to tend the rabbits, he didn't realise he was hurting her because he was panicking about George and the rabbits. Lennie did not think that he was doing wrong!
When she carried on yelling, Lennie became more angry (which is not usually like him) and said...
“Don’t you go yellin’,” he said, and he shook her; and her body flopped like a fish. And then she was still, for Lennie had broken her neck.
This shows that he does not realise how strong he is and that killing someone is bad, as he didn't understand when killing the pup too. Lennie also did not know he was hurting her, he did not see the strength he had!
